Sharing St. Croix's music, arts and culture with the world while inviting the world to share St. Croix
International
By James (JJ Rocks) Johnston
I always enjoy jazz fusion when it’s played clean and precise. It’s great to hear all the notes instead of trying to pick them out of a wall of distortion or speed demon technical acrobatics. And I’m very attracted to musical adventurism when it’s combined with a lot of taste. Kuma De Silva from Piliyandala, Colombo, Sri Lanka has these qualities.
With shades of Chick Corea and Bob James, this fine pianist plays it crystal clear and silky smooth. His phrasing is well defined and colorful while still exhibiting great chops. And as he flows from a modal sounding fusion piece to a classic jazz style, there is also a hint of international flavor. His music could also be used in movies and TV because of the many moods it creates.
Kuma De Silva is also in the company of some very fine musicians like Dulip Gnanakan on bass, and Sumuthi SUraweera on drums. So let’s welcome them all into our international family of independent musicians by visiting the site below. Then just sit back and enjoy! – JJ Rocks
